How to pronounce Japanese words

Want to sound like a pro at the sushi bar? Or maybe you are learning Japanese and need a little extra help pronouncing things properly. This How To article will teach you how to pronounce Japanese words correctly!

Difficulty: Moderately EasyInstructionsThings You'll Need:

A place where you can talk to yourself without people thinking you're crazy.

Step 1The Japanese language consists of syllables, not letters. For example, Karate is spelled か ら て (ka, ra, te). The Japanese sound system sometimes blends or substitutes sounds we're used to. Most people know that the Japanese make no differentiation between the R and L sound.

Step 2The sound RA does not sound like ';RAW';. When you pronounce the English word ';raw';, your lips come a little closer together. Your tongue moves in the back, inside the groove of the roof of your mouth.

Step 3When you pronounce the English word ';law';, your mouth opens wider and your tongue moves from the back of your top front teeth to the bottom of your mouth.

Step 4The Japanese sound ';RA'; is a combination of these two motions. When pronounced quickly, it can sometimes be confused with a soft DA sound, and sounds a bit like a rolled R.

Step 5In Japanese, all V sounds are switched to B sounds. You may notice this when a Japanese person pronounces the word ';very'; (BE-RI).

Step 6F is not pronounced like the F in ';finger'; or ';soft';. It's pronounced a lot more like a H. Make your lips into a whistling shape (tiny O) and slowly blow air out. Keeping your lips in this position, whisper an F sound. That's roughly how the F is pronounced. When in doubt, pronounce it with a F OR H sound and you'll be understood.

Step 7The vowels are also pronounced differently than in English and there is no variation in the sound (that's easy!).

A is ALWAYS pronounced ';AH'; (what you say when you're at the dentist)

E is pronounced ';EH'; (almost exactly how you'd think but it can sound almost like a hard A in some words. ';Men'; would be pronounced almost like ';main';)

I is ALWAYS pronounced like a hard E, NEVER like a soft I. (ICHI is pronounced EE-CHI NOT itchy)

O is pronounced ';Oh'; (you can pronounce this a little deeper in your throat with your mouth forming an O shape)

U is pronounce (like a OO sound, like ';moo';)

Step 8Sounds like KYO are pronounced ';K'YO'; (one sound), NOT ';KEE-YOH';.

Step 9There is no SI (';SEE';) sound. All ';SEE'; sounds are written SHI (';SHEE';).

There is no TU (';TOO';) sound. All ';TOO'; sounds are written TSU (like ';TSIE'; in ';Tootsie Roll';)

All TH sounds become T sounds.

Step 10Lots and LOTS of words end in a SU. GO-ZA-I-MA-SU (polite ending added after thank you and good morning and lots of other things). The U is often omitted or half pronounced or trailed off.

Step 11In English, many vowel sounds are formed by combinations of vowels. In Japanese, the most important thing to remember is that EVERY VOWEL starts a new sound. In GO-ZA-I-MA-SU, ';ZA-I'; does not become one sound. There is a clear distinction between the A and I sound (';ZAH-EE';).

Step 12When you see a double vowel (Oosaka), you pronounce the sound LONGER. Always remember to pronounce EACH VOWEL SEPARATELY!
