How should I go about trying to become a songwriter in the music industry?

How do songwriters enter the music industry? I have minimal experience as far as producing goes but I have enough to help direct an experienced producer. At this current time I am fairly confident with writing Electro-pop songs and Alt Rock songs but I feel I can work in almost any mainstream genre. I can use Sibelius and I can notate my music but I don't really play an instrument well enough to do anything with it. I'm just curious as to how someone like me would about it.
